Even though they [the Indians] are not of my people. I know for certain that their bodies were carried to these sarcophagi (nawawis) situated beside this pond that we constructed for them. I have long desired to stand over these sarcophagi and look upon the bodies to see what has become of them."
Hormuz said to him: "This matter is not something you can reach at this moment unless you consult this King [the Indian]—that he might bestow this favor upon us and grant you permission. For you are now within His kingdom, and humiliation before Him has encompassed you."
Khosrow said to him: "O Hormuz, ask Him for that." Hormuz replied: "By Allah, O Khosrow, He already knew what you uttered and what you spoke of before the words even left your mouth to reach me. If He wills it, He will bestow it upon you and make it easy for you. By Allah, O Khosrow, what you have seen has become great in your eyes, and you desire this [knowledge]."
By Allah, O Jabir—[Ali continued]—Hormuz had not even finished his speech to Khosrow when Khosrow looked to his right, and behold! The sarcophagi were there as they were, fully occupied; not a single person was missing from them. He began to go around them, looking at the body of one man after another, recognizing each one. Then he would look at the assembly of Indians and see that very same person standing there, identical in eye, name, and person.
