Hormuz said to him: "He [the Indian] says: Call upon whomever you wish among those who perished, for he shall answer you just as you would call him in life, in a manner that it will appear to you that he is right before you, hearing and answering."
At that, Khosrow called upon a steward (qahraman) he once had, named Shah ibn Bandik ibn Karukar, who had been among his most illustrious stewards during his time. He called him by his name, and he answered him, while [Khosrow] was saying: "I see you beneath the grave (al-rams)."
Then [the figure] approached until he stood opposite Khosrow, and behold, he [the steward] was an Indian in the form and appearance of the Indians. Khosrow began to address him in the Persian tongue, mentioning states and matters known to Khosrow. Shah [the steward] responded to him in Persian, reminding Khosrow of what he had been through and what had occurred with him. Khosrow recognized everything he mentioned until it was confirmed to him beyond doubt that it was indeed him.
Khosrow said to him: "What became of so-and-so and so-and-so?" and he began to name those Persians who had perished in the same manner he had. The steward replied: "Behold, they are all standing opposite you; call upon whomever you wish among them, and they shall answer you." He did so; Khosrow began to call them, and they answered him one after another and group after group.
