" The Messenger of Allah—Glorified be His Might—said to him: "Did I not tell you: 'Whomever I was his master, then this Ali is his Meaning (Ma'nah) and his master'?" He replied: "Yes."

I said: "My master, has Mu'awiya been informed by all of these in every station, yet he has never believed?" He replied: "Yes, O Ammar; and even in [the time of] Adam before this, many times, yet he never believes." I said: "O my Lord, then do not give him respite, and hasten his punishment." He said: "O Ammar, I only intend by him [to test] those who are of his kind and who opposed just as he opposed, and I make him a proof against them. You ask him yourself, O Ammar."

I said: "Woe to you, Mu'awiya, because of Ali! How long will you continue your opposition to your Lord and not believe? Do you not fear His strike?" He said: "O Ammar, when has Mu'awiya ever been free from His punishment? Indeed, I only know myself through types of repeated punishment; I eat excrement and weeds, and I am cast into carcasses and filth, never resting by night or day, nor for years or ages. So let not what you see of His respite for me and His empowering me deceive you; for shortly, Mu'awiya shall see what Ali ibn Abi Talib intends for him." I said: "My master, what will become of him at this moment?" He said: "Look at him." I looked at him, and behold, he was hunched over a carcass, eating it. I said: "Woe to you, Mu'awiya! How quickly your Lord has transformed you and made an example of you!"
