Just as it is sometimes simulated to us, and imagined by our eyes, certain matters that have no existence in reality and bear no connection to the truth. An example of this is that it was simulated to the Jews and imagined by their eyes that they killed the Master the Messiah, glorified is his glory, and crucified him, whereas they did not kill him, nor did they crucify him, but rather it was simulated to them, just as He, the Exalted, said: {And they did not kill him, nor did they crucify him, but another was made to resemble him to them} 1

Likewise, what occurred to Moses, glorified is his glory, regarding the imagination which Allah mentioned in His Holy Book by His, the Exalted's, saying: {It was imagined to him from their magic that they were moving [rapidly]} 2 ; whereas they—meaning the staffs—did not move nor stir, but rather it was thus simulated to the onlooker; and far be it from the Prophet of Allah that he himself should be deceived by imagination, rather this is situated within us and returns to us.
