These forms, shapes, and bodily outlines that we perceived—which stem from our own side and due to the cause of our elemental mixture—are ultimately returning to us and falling upon us, because they are the attributes of the onlooker, not the attributes of the One looked upon. Since the Creator, glorified is He, is transcended above these forms, shapes, and outlines, they must be negated and He must be declared transcendent above them; for the onlooker looking at the Sublime Essence perceives nothing but the likeness of his own form and attributes.

This is in accordance with the saying of our Master as-Sadiq, glorified is his glory, when he was asked about the occurrence of sight from the onlooker falling upon the witnessed form. He said:

"Verily, the onlooker looks upon the radiance of the light of that form according to his own capacity and the simplicity of his essence. Thus, the light of his sight encounters that light looked upon, which prevents him from true comprehension. Consequently, the light of the onlooker's vision reflects back upon himself, so he perceives nothing but the likeness of his own form according to his capacity.
