Just as the Sabbath is the Dahr which is the rest of the days, months, and years, likewise the manifestation symbolized by it is all human and luminous manifestations; it also signifies transcendence (Tanzih), because the Sabbath is symbolized by the Holy Essence, which denotes transcendence above all attributes and the impossibility of perception. He named it with the name "Sabbath" (Sabt) because it indicates Subat (slumber), which is the sleep that denotes the illusion that cannot be perceived. Its origin is rest—the rest of a human from all verbal and physical occupations and actions, according to the saying of the Exalted: {And We made your sleep a rest [Subata]} (Al-Naba 9). The name "Sabbath" is derived from the meaning of Dahr (Eternity/Time), for the Sabbath is Dahr; and the Sabbath is also Qat’ (cutting/severing), which indicates transcendence and the lack of perception.
Know that the preservation referred to by the Exalted in the Torah regarding the Sabbath day—in the true Inward—is the reliance on the transcendence of the Essence and all its existences from names and attributes, while believing that all manifestations are one Essence, just as all Sabbaths are one Sabbath. He commanded the killing of whoever transgresses with an action—which refers to sayings and beliefs—that is not befitting the Sabbath, to emphasize the concealment of His secret and the non-application of attributes upon Him.
