these are the ones killed by a violent blow (al-mawqūdhah), those killed by a head-long fall (al-mutaraddiyah), and those mauled by wild beasts—this [return to lawfulness] occurs after purification (al-tazkiyah), according to the saying of the Almighty: “{...except what you [are able to] slaughter [before its death].}” (Al-Ma'idah 3).

Among them are those which are prohibited absolutely after [being] lawful and never become lawful again; such is the dead animal (al-maytah), whether it died by a fall, the mauling of wild beasts, a blow, a disease, or being sacrificed to other than Allah, or of any type whatsoever—except that which is slaughtered in the name of Allah or for the sake of Allah. And among them is that which is prohibited perpetually: blood, and the female [of the cattle]—except for the females of the lawful birds.

Among them are those which are prohibited without being struck (mawqūdhah), mauled (manhūshah), or fallen (mutaraddiyah); even if they were slaughtered for the sake of Allah, Allah would not accept them. These are what people take from their brothers unjustly, such as through theft, usury (riba), looting, and the like.

Among these cattle and metamorphosed creatures (al-masūkhāt) are those whose possession and touching are lawful, but whose eating is not lawful, such as horses, mules, and donkeys—both female and male—as well as the females of the lawful [animals], such as cows, goats, buffaloes, and sheep.
