however, if one of them hears it, and then the other becomes connected (ta’allaqa) after the separation of the first, [it is allowed], according to the saying of the Almighty: “{...and that you gather two sisters [in wedlock] together, except for what has already passed.}” (An-Nisa' 23).

Thus, its outer meaning (zahir) is lawful and its inner meaning (batin) is lawful. The sum of what we have mentioned in this verse is:

“{Forbidden to you are your mothers, your daughters, your sisters, your paternal aunts, your maternal aunts, your brother's daughters, your sister's daughters, your [foster] mothers who suckled you, your sisters through fosterage, your wives' mothers, and your step-daughters under your guardianship [born] of your wives unto whom you have gone in—but if you have not gone in unto them, there is no sin upon you—and the wives of your sons who are from your [own] loins, and that you gather two sisters [in wedlock] together, except for what has already passed. Indeed, Allah is ever Forgiving and Merciful.}” (An-Nisa' 23).

Esoteric explanation of the verse: And do not marry those women whom your fathers married

As for the saying of the Almighty: “{And do not marry those [women] whom your fathers married, except what has already passed. Indeed, it was an immorality and hateful [to Allah] and was evil as a way.}” (An-Nisa' 22).
