That is, to fulfill the intent of Moses with the inward meanings of the law, because what is intended by it is its Inward, not its Outward.

Likewise is the meaning of the saying of the Exalted: {Say, "O People of the Scripture, you are [standing] on nothing until you uphold the Torah and the Gospel"} (Al-Ma'idah 68).

For it runs in the same course as what Christ said, likeness for likeness and weight for weight.

And the Lord Christ manifested the crucifixion upon himself because of his rejection of the outward law. It is nothing but an example for teaching and discipline—that is, so the believers may know that it is not permissible for them to believe in the Outward of the law, because believing in its Outward is disbelief itself, just as believing in the affirmation of the crucifixion upon Christ is disbelief itself, and so they may also know that whoever rejects the outward law openly is killed, just as the Lord Christ—peace be upon him—was killed. If we do not cover the Inward with the Outward, that would be a violation of Allah's secret, which it is not permitted to disclose to the enemies of Allah; and by revealing it to them, a great harm would befall us, as the Lord Christ said: "Do not give what is holy to the dogs, and do not cast your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet and turn and tear you to pieces."
