Jihad according to the view of Al-Makzun regarding the purification of the soul
I say: The great scholar Prince Hasan bin Makzun (may Allah sanctify his soul) has bestowed upon us what he clarified in the seventh chapter of his treatise titled Tazkiyat al-Nafs [Purification of the Soul] regarding the knowledge of the inward meaning of Jihad, saying:
"Know—may Allah grant you success in His pleasure—that Jihad is one of the five obligations. it is a duty upon every Muslim with sound limbs and senses. Its legal definition points to two meanings:
First: The Muslim’s combat against the people of disbelief in Allah, alongside the army of the Muslims.
Second: A man’s struggle against his own soul in opposing desires, and maintaining the performance of what Allah the Exalted commanded and mandated, and what His truthful Messenger (peace be upon him) established as traditions—including acts of obedience and avoiding sins and prohibitions. These are outward rulings.
However, Inward Worship [Al-Ta'abbud al-Batin] comes in seven aspects:
The First Aspect: The struggle of the seeker of true knowledge against his own soul to reject familiar habits [al-ma’lufat], abandon desires, and purify the soul from corrupt beliefs and false imaginations.
