As for Zakat, which is the Gate, it is a reminder that He (the Exalted) has mandated upon us the bestowal of the Science—symbolized by Zakat—to its people, just as He mandated upon us the knowledge of Him—symbolized by Water and the washing of physical limbs with it.

He also intended to alert us that the knowledge of the Greatest Name [Muhammad]—symbolized by the mandated Prayer and prostration to Him—is not valid except through the intent toward the Science originating from the station of the Noblest Gate [Salman], accepting it, and having faith and acting upon it. This is symbolized by the intent toward the literal, outward Water mandated upon us when turning toward Prayer and washing the literal, physical limbs, which themselves represent the Luminous Persons and the aforementioned Water.

Explanation of the saying My outward is the esoteric of my Name, and the outward of my Name is the esoteric of my Door

Indeed, he—may Allah brighten his face—mentioned Water to us in the first of the Five Limits, just as he mentioned the Luminous Being [Al-Kawn al-Nurani], which is the Noblest Gate, in another poem as the first of the Six Beings. He also mentioned him at the head of the chiefs of the degrees of the ranks of the Gates. All of this is to demonstrate that entry into the gate of religious gnoses can only occur through the mediation of the illumination of the science of the Luminous Being—the Noblest Gate—upon the good and pure souls and their acceptance of it.
