For the believers, the people of Gnosis and Faith, have degrees: among them is the weak in comprehension, among them is the chief in guardianship [Walaya], and among them is the lowly and the high. Zakat is a mandatory obligation and an inevitable right; it is the gate of Paradise and the key of Mercy, for we have seen two hundred hadiths regarding the state of Zakat. Allah the Exalted said:
{He has certainly succeeded who purifies himself [Tazakka], and mentions the name of his Lord and prays} (Al-A'la 14-15).
And His saying: {And establish prayer and give zakat} (Al-Baqarah 43).
And His saying: {So I have warned you of a Fire which is blazing. None will burn in it except the most wretched, who denied and turned away. But the righteous one will be avoided it—he who gives his wealth to purify himself [Yatazakka]} (Al-Layl 14-18).
Explanation of the meaning of Zakat is it for the elite and the commoners, or does it have specific people? Whoever pleases a denier and an opponent is penalized by the dropping of his sanctity!
The Commander of the Faithful said to one who narrated: "A dirham [spent] during Hajj is [equal to] a thousand dirhams without Hajj." He answered: "Indeed, spending one dirham on a deserving recipient [Mustahiqq] is counted as a thousand dirhams given to one who is not deserving."
