The People of the Outward interpreted the moon as being the month, let alone the People of Monotheism. Fasting, in this context, is silence regarding the disclosure of His secrets.

Abstaining from what the soul—which commands evil—desires was named "Fasting." Similarly, refraining from religious devotion to the Outward Sciences [Al-Ulum al-Zahira] was named "Fasting," and refraining from the guardianship [Walaya] of the Opposites was named "Fasting." The Noblest Gate [Salman] was named "Struggle" [Jihad], and the name "Jihad" may be applied to everything with which a believer struggles for Allah, including knowledge and action. All the Manifestations [Zuhurat] were named "Houses" [Buyut], and the intent toward their gnosis was named "Hajj," just as the Manifestations were also named days, months, hours, and so on.

In summary, I say: All the people of the earth do not know anything of Allah's intent except what He (the Exalted) willed for them through the tongues of the Successors [Awsiya], the Messengers [Rusul], and those who follow them from the Worlds of Light, whom Allah described by His saying: {Honored servants; they do not precede Him in speech, and they act by His command} (Al-Anbiya 26-27).

These are infallible [Ma'sumun] from error and forgetfulness.
