The Answer: From what was narrated in the book (Al-Haft al-Kabir), a narration by al-Mufaddal ibn Umar on the authority of the Master Jafar al-Sadiq—peace be from him—that he said:
Know, O Mufaddal, that the burdens and shackles were only placed upon the Short-fallers [Muqassira], and the shackles are the manifest obligations [Al-Fara'id al-Zahira], which are binding upon the People of the Outward and mandatory for them to perform. However, that has been lifted from the mature believers who acknowledge the Lordship [Rububiyya] of the Commander of the Faithful, according to the saying of the Messenger—may Allah's prayers be upon him and his family: "Whoever knows Allah with the reality of knowledge, the limit of obligation, the shackles, and the burdens fall from him." "Obligation" refers to these outward commands. Allah did not charge the believer who is a Gnostic of them with their [spiritual] performance; rather, Allah made it mandatory for him to perform them in the presence of the general public [Al-Amma], according to the saying of the Master al-Sadiq: "Be an adornment for us and do not be a disgrace to us."
