Our Master, the Commander of the Faithful [Ali], said many things in his sermons, such as his saying: "I am the Fig, I am the Olive, I am the Gate, I am the Ring, I am the Handle, I am the Lock, I am the Key... and other worldly names; and all of those are outward images indicating inward meanings.

I have presented in this treatise many narrations indicating also that outward faith is an image, outward disbelief is an image, outward truth is an image, outward falsehood is an image, outward paradise is an image, and outward fire is an image. Likewise, the tree is an image, and mankind is an image. All of these images existing in the visible world are but sensory images of intellectual entities.
