(Al-An'am 98). This refers to the hearts of the believers: the "place of dwelling" (Mustaqarr) is where faith has settled and become hidden in the heart. The "place of storage" (Mustawda’) refers to the veils; just as what is in storage is taken, so too the correct path leaves what is in them. If the heart truly believed in disbelief, it would never have attained faith; and if it truly believed in faith, it would never have disbelieved. Whatever good comes from the disbeliever and goodness, that is from the "deposit" (Al-Wadi'a) within the veils. When the veil is denied, what is within it is taken; thus the heart of the disbeliever remains as pure disbelief with no good in it, and the heart of the believer remains as pure faith. When the deposits and veils are taken away and the "dwelling" (Al-Istiqrar) remains in the heart, then everything destined for cessation is from the veils, and everything not destined for cessation is from the "bodies" [spiritual forms] created by Allah; upon this, He considers faith and disbelief.

Returning to the water metaphors I was mentioning, I say:

Just as we see that each of the variations—snow, hail, and ice—when the cold and frost vanish, each of them transforms into water as it was before the increase in the degree of coldness upon it; likewise, for each of us, when these human bodies and their varied states depart from us upon the purification from murkiness, we shall see our Creator as we used to see Him in the Great Luminosity—sanctified from this transformation—before our descent and our composition within these shadowy bodies.
