what is His name?" The Scholar said: "He is Allah." The questioner asked: "Is it a name or a meaning?" He said...
The Scholar: It is a meaning. The Questioner: Then the Meaning must have a name so that people may know it by it, and that is because Allah is a name for Himself and a meaning for Himself.
As for the saying of the People of Monotheism: Indeed, the Name is forever One (Wahid). This is to indicate the placement of names, attributes, limits, and descriptions upon the Greatest Name, and for the transcendence of the Meaning (the Exalted) above them. This is because The One (Al-Wahid) is the name of one who has no partner in his attributes, and he is the Greatest Name. He was called by the name The Veil so that attributes could be placed upon him, just as he was called The Name so that names could be placed upon him.
Therefore, they established that Al-Ahad is the Worshiped Meaning and its day is Master Muhammad, indicating that the Ancient Meaning—whom the Greatest Name only sees through Primacy and Attributes—is the Meaning with whom nothing shares in His Essence, and upon whom no name or attribute falls in His Inwardness. It is also to indicate that He shows His Essence through the Primacy which is his [the Name's] Attribute of the Name.
