and those who deny Him—and He veiled all of creation from knowing the core of His Essence, except for Him [the Veil]. He warned them all and guided them toward obedience to Him.
It was said to him: O our Master, explain it to us with a clear explanation?
He said: A Veil that hides the Essence from Names and Attributes.
Regarding the meaning of their saying: "And the Described is the Gate," it is to indicate that the description by creatures of the Attribute—which is attached to the Greatest Name—is not as it befits its Divine perfection. This is because the Attribute of the Name is only known as it truly is by the Worshiped Meaning who invented it, formed it, and perfected it. What the Luminous beings witness of its perfected attributes is according to their own measure, not as it is in itself. The description they give of it is according to their capacity, not as it is in itself.
Therefore, the People of Monotheism said: "The Attribute is the Name, and the Described is the Gate," as we previously stated. Because the Attribute attributed to the Worshiped Meaning falls upon the Name, while the Meaning is transcendent above it.
