I say: What is intended here by "their names"—meaning these outward names whose outward meaning they believe in while rejecting their inward meaning—is that we must oppose them through them; so we reject their outward and believe in their inward.
So contemplate, O virtuous brother, these narrations and verses indicating the permissibility of wine and the narrations and verses indicating its prohibition. You will find that the narrations of prohibition have one meaning and the narrations of permissibility have another meaning, because they differ outwardly but agree inwardly. This is because the narrations of permissibility regarding wine intend the inward science of Oneness and the luminous persons, just as The narrations of censure and prohibition refer to the science of the outward Opposite and the censured persons. As for the used outward wine, neither praise nor censure is applied to it in the Mighty Book, because there is no reward in its action nor punishment in its abandonment, like the outward permissible foods, drinks, and clothes which we are not permitted to believe in nor to abandon their use in times of necessity.
