This indicates to the expert Gnostic that the names and attributes are applied to Him (the Exalted) metaphorically, not literally, due to need and necessity, as established by the philosopher scholar Hassan ibn Hamza ibn Muhammad al-Shirazi (may Allah sanctify his soul) in the fourth warning of his book titled Al-Tanbih (The Warning). He said:
"Wisdom does not allow the worship of a name or an attribute if they point to a named and described [entity]. Therefore, they must be a path, not a destination, because every name and attribute is limited if they fall under comprehension and spelling—which are the letters (A, B, T, Th...). Have you not heard the saying of the Exalted: {They are but names you have named, you and your fathers, for which Allah has sent down no authority} (An-Najm 23).
If one asks: Why then is the name The One (Al-Wahid) applied to the Creator, which did not nothing shares with Him in His attributes, just as the name Al-Ahad (The Unique) is applied to Him, indicating that nothing shares with Him in His Essence?
I say: The application of the name Al-Wahid (The One) to the Exalted is like the application of the names Hasan, Husayn, and other "parable names" (al-Asma’ al-Mathaliyya) to His Essence.
