And from what was narrated by the author of the (Egyptian) Epistle in the third chapter thereof, from the learned Master, from whom is peace, that he was asked about wine?

He said: "Wine is two wines: a permissible wine and another forbidden. The permissible is the drink, the Servant of Light. The forbidden is the person because of whom the drink was forbidden for whoever was with him and was not forbidden for whoever was against him." It was said to him: "And who is he? Increase us in knowledge of him." He said: "He is the one regarding whom Allah said: {We have certainly created man in the best of stature; Then We returned him to the lowest of the low} (At-Tin 4-5)."

So we said: And who is that, O our Master? He said: He is Abu Bakr Abdullah bin Uthman; he was created in the best of stature, meaning in the best form, and that was when Muhammad was in his loins; but when Muhammad departed, he was (returned to the lowest of the low).

And from the Book of Veils and Lights, from the Commander of the Faithful, from whom is mercy, that he said to al-Asbagh ibn Nubatah: Every intoxicant is wine, and every intoxicant is forbidden.

Then he said: Their sciences are forbidden for you to take anything from them, and their names are forbidden for you to be named by them.
