intend by these names the apparent (al-Zahirah) [names], except those esoteric gnoses and persons (al-Ma'arif wa al-Ashkhas al-Batinah), and so that we may use those names as a guide to those gnoses and persons.

Just as Abu 'Abdullah Jalal al-Din bin Mi'mar al-Sufi al-Baghdadi established regarding the knowledge of names in his book titled Taqwim al-Asma' fi Ma'rifat Ashkhas al-Ard wa al-Sama' [The Evaluation of Names in Knowing the Persons of the Earth and the Heaven], saying:

"And do not think that by the knowledge of names you will enter the enclosure of heaven (Hazirat al-Sama'). Rather, the names are a cause for ascension ('Uruj), and a means for entry (Wuluj). So ponder them with sound hearts and upright intentions."
