And God Almighty has alerted us to that by His reply to them in Surat al-A'raf, by His saying: {They said, "Have you come to us that we should worship God alone and leave what our fathers have worshipped? Then bring us what you promise us, if you should be of the truthful." He said, "Punishment and wrath have already fallen upon you from your Lord. Do you dispute with me concerning [mere] names you have named them, you and your fathers, for which God has not sent down any authority? Then wait; indeed, I am with you among those who wait."} (Al-A'raf: 70-71).

And He Almighty said, alluding to this meaning in His address to the baker and the cupbearer (al-Khabbaz wa al-Saqi) in Surat Yusuf: {O two companions of prison, are separate lords better or God, the One, the Prevailing? You worship not besides Him except [mere] names you have named them, you and your fathers, for which God has sent down no authority. Judgment (al-Hukm) is not but for God. He has commanded that you worship not except Him. That is the correct religion, but most of the people do not know.} (Yusuf: 39-40).

And by His saying in Surat Ar-Ra'd: {And they have attributed to God partners. Say, "Name them. Or do you inform Him of that which He knows not upon the earth or of what is apparent of speech (Zahir min al-Qawl)?" Rather, their plot is made attractive to those who disbelieve, and they are averted from the way. And whomever God sends astray - there is for him no guide.} (Ar-Ra'd: 33).
