Exalted, knew that {if they come to know of you, they will stone you or return you to their religion, and then you will never succeed} (Al-Kahf 20), His Messenger and the Pure Imams manifested dissimulation (talbees) toward them and practiced ruse (makr) through their words and deeds. They established these exoteric acts of worship (ibadat) upon them; all of which was for the instruction and discipline of the believers, so they might deduce how to practice concealment by upholding Taqiyya among them, and so they might also use the exoteric (zahir) as a guide to the esoteric (batin). For were it not for that, after the withdrawal of the Worlds of Light from them, they would not have known either the exoteric or the esoteric.
This indicates that all the words and deeds manifested by the Worlds of Light are entirely for instruction and discipline—meaning, to teach us through their sciences and discipline us with their manners. Were it not for that, there would be no benefit to the people in their manifestations.
