And of that is what was narrated in the book (Al-Taliqan) regarding the Prophet’s (peace be upon him) dissimulation (talbees) towards them and his allusion to his close followers (awliya') by his saying: “I discipline you with the manners of Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, which is that I command you that the servant stands for his master, the learner for the scholar, the disciple for the sage, and the small for the large; and we—the assembly of Prophets—have been commanded not to stand except for the Lord, exalted be His Name and sublime be His mention.” Then Ali arrived after a while, and when the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) saw him, he stood up for him and kissed what is between his eyes. So they said to him: “O Messenger of Allah, you have just said: ‘the learner stands for the scholar,’ yet you are more knowledgeable than Ali and Ali learned from you; and you said: ‘the small stands for the large,’ yet you are older than Ali; and you said: ‘we, the assembly of Prophets, do not stand except for the Lord, the Mighty and Sublime,’ yet we saw you standing for Ali...?”
He said: “I stood for the Light that is between his eyes.”
In another narration, he said: “My brother Gabriel entered upon his entry, so I stood for him.”
