The application of the names of the Inward Personages to their outward forms is like applying the names of the Celestial Luminous Beings to the earthly dark beings, or like applying the names of the heavenly Zodiac signs to Aries, Taurus, Gemini... etc. Thus is the case for the rest of the ambiguous and metaphorical names.
Among the examples pointing to the Inward is how Allah described Himself in His Mighty Book with human physical attributes, and like the previously mentioned sayings of our Master, the Commander of the Faithful—such as his saying: 'I am the servant of Allah and the brother of the Messenger of Allah.' And others. This is so the Gnostic (al-ʿārif) may deduce that the one [who appears] in the Outward (al-ẓāhir) with those attributes is Allah, who is transcendent above them. He only manifested through them as a kindness for Divine Familiarity (muʾānasa) with the believers, and as a ruse to remain concealed (tastur) from the deniers. Thus, believing in their Outward [meaning] is anthropomorphism (tashbīh) and corporealism (tajsīm); whereas believing in the negation of the Outward and the transcendence of the Creator (al-Bāriʾ) from the Fifteen States is the pure Monotheism (al-tawḥīd al-khāliṣ).
