{And they were guided to the good of speech and were guided to the path of the Praiseworthy.} (Al-Ḥajj: 24).
And there is another aspect considered by the masters of insight (arbāb al-baṣāʾir), which is that He—the Almighty—has named the Inward personages and the Inward gnoses (al-maʿārif al-bāṭina) by the names of Fasting, Prayer, Pilgrimage, Almsgiving, and Jihad; likewise, He named their [outward] forms with the names of the Inward Personages and gnoses.
Allah—glory be to Him—mentioned those names in His Mighty Book with glorification and made them an obligatory duty (farḍan mafrūḍan) so that the literalist disbeliever (al-kāfir al-ḥashwī) would believe those outward forms are required of him and thus suffer in their performance, and so that the believer would know that the intent behind these obligations is their Luminous Personages and their Inward meanings. As for their outward forms, they are ambiguous (mutashābihāt) followed only by the people of deviation and misguidance. The performance of these five outward Limits (al-ḥudūd) by the people of disbelief resembles the Inward Limits as a mirage resembles water.
