"What I tell you in the dark, speak in the light." (Matthew).

The meaning of his saying—peace be upon him: "What I tell you in the darkness, speak in the light," is: whatever I tell you by these dark, transient, and outward names and images, believe that they are signs, parables, and images to point toward the Luminous Personages (al-ashkhāṣ al-nūrāniyya).

And similar to it is what he—peace be upon him—said in the twelfth chapter of the Gospel of Matthew, where he says: "Either make the tree good and its fruit good, or make the tree bad and its fruit bad; for the tree is known by its fruit." Meaning: make the praised parable refer to praised personages and praised gnosis (maʿārif), and make the blamed parable refer to blamed personages and blamed gnosis.

The Almighty pointed toward this meaning in Surah Ibrahim, saying:

{Have you not seen how Allah presents an example: a good word like a good tree, whose root is firmly fixed and its branch is in the sky? It yields its fruit in every season by the permission of its Lord. And Allah presents examples for the people that perhaps they will be reminded. And the example of a bad word is like a bad tree, uprooted from the surface of the earth, having no stability. Allah keeps firm those who believe, with the firm word, in the worldly life and in the Hereafter.
