Then they said: "The Son of the Deity is a Deity,"
And they rose in their ignorance to worship him.
Then they brought something even stranger than that, When they claimed that they had crucified him.
Would that I knew—oh, would that I could understand—At the hour of the crucifixion, where was his father?
When he left his son as a hostage to the enemies,
Did they please him, or did they provoke his wrath?
My wonder is at Christ among the Christians
And to which father have they attributed him?
They handed him over to the Jews and said:
Indeed, after killing him, they crucified him.
And if what they say were the truth
And were correct—then where is that which they attributed?
For if he was pleased with their harm,
Then praise them, for they [only] put him to a test.
But if he was resentful, then leave him
And worship them [the Jews], for they overcame him!
