The rich and poor disbeliever... The rich and poor believer..
Among the sayings transmitted regarding this meaning is what our Master, Sheikh Mahmoud, in his age—may Allah sanctify him—reported in the treatise Tuhfat al-Akhyar (The Gift of the Chosen), saying: "Whoever relies on the Pure Outward (Al-Zahir al-Mahd) is a Hashwi (a literalist/exotericist). Whoever clings to the Pure Inward (Al-Batin al-Sarf) is a Mulhid (an apostate/heretic). But whoever combines the Outward and the Inward together—meaning through Dissimulation (Taqiya), Piety (Taqwa), and Faith—is a monotheist believer, a gnostic, and a verifier (Muhaqqiq). As Our Master, the Commander of the Faithful [Ali], said:
"Two types of people perish concerning me: the extremist lover (muhibbun ghal) and the hateful detractor (mubghidun qal)."
Meaning: the one who exaggerates his status publicly [revealing secrets] and the one who hates him; both are destroyed.
The same applies to the one who clings to the Pure Inward and broadcasts it to the Opposites (Al-Addad); he has opposed Allah just as the one who relies on the Pure Outward has.
