Spiritual Essence (Dhatuhu al-Ma‘nawiyya al-Ilahiyya) as He truly is, not as we perceive Him; likewise, it is not permissible for us to believe in the ephemeral worldly things which are the Outward (Zahir) aspects of the Five Boundaries (Al-Hudud al-Khamsa) and other outward words and deeds. Instead, we must believe in the Inward Meanings (Al-Ma‘ani al-Batina) and the Luminous Persons (Al-Ashkhas al-Nuraniyya) signified by them.
Furthermore, had He—the Glorified—not made these revealed Books and His sayings, and the sayings of the Worlds of Light (Awalim al-Nur), remain until now, no one would have been able to find their way to this Inward Religion after His Occultation (Ghayba) and the absence of the Worlds of Light—who continue to be absent due to His absence and manifest due to His manifestation.
Notice: Know that establishing those Outward Worships (Al-‘Ibadat al-Zahira) in seclusions (Al- Khalwat)—out of fear of forgetting them when among the Opposites (Al-Addad) and not for the sake of religious devotion or belief in them—is permissible and not forbidden; for "actions are by intentions."
