Through this address, Allah—Glory be to Him—reminds us that He has sent down for us a "garment", which is what He manifested of obfuscation (Talbis) within the human cycles (al-adwar al-bashariyya), the outward dialogues in the revealed books, and the outward religious laws—so that we may use them as a garment and veil ourselves with them. For if we do not veil ourselves through this obfuscation (Al-Addad). If we do not conceal the inward secrets from them, they will discover what grieves us—meaning, what brings us harm from them. This is because our belief in the Inward (Al-Batin) grieves them; then our "private parts" (Saw’atuna) appear to us—meaning, we witness the harm resulting from disobedience, eating from the Tree, mixing [with them], and revealing our inward knowledge. This knowledge is considered an "evil" (su’) to us in their eyes because it grieves them, as it contains censure of them, contradicts their whims and opinions, and asserts our superiority over them. Witnessing this harm is the retribution we see.
The Almighty has alerted us that practicing dissimulation (Taqiya) among them is better, by His saying: {But the clothing of piety (Libas al-Taqwa)—that is best. That is from the signs of Allah that perhaps they will remember} (Al-A’raf: 26).
