Indeed, it is [promised] for you that you will not be hungry therein nor be unclothed, and that you will not be thirsty therein nor be exposed to the sun." Then Satan whispered to him; he said, "O Adam, shall I direct you to the Tree of Immortality and a kingdom that does not decay?" So they both ate from it, and their private parts (saw'atuhuma) became apparent to them, and they began to fasten over themselves from the leaves of Paradise. And Adam disobeyed his Lord and erred. Then his Lord chose him and turned to him in forgiveness and guided [him]. [Allah] said, "Descend from it [Paradise] all of you together as enemies to one another. Then if there should come to you guidance from Me—then whoever follows My guidance will neither go astray nor suffer. And whoever turns away from My remembrance—indeed, he will have a narrow life, and We will gather him on the Day of Resurrection blind."} (Taha: 117-124).

I say: Paradise in this verse represents Purity (Al-Safa) and the divine Inward Gnosis (Al-Ma'rifa al-Batina). Satan is the cursed Opposite (Al-Didd), and his party is the People of Darkness. The Tree is their forbidden knowledge, from before the Descent until our present time. Eating from it signifies taking from it, inclining toward it, and believing in it.
