This confirms that what He—the Almighty—enjoined upon the Prophets is the Inward Religion (Al-Din al-Batin), in which there is no division, and not this outward religion. It also indicates that its acceptance was difficult for the polytheists, and that God commanded steadfastness upon the Decisive Inward (Al-Batin al-Muhkam) and forbade the following of desire and the belief in the Ambiguous Outward (Al-Zahir al-Mutashabih). All of this is a teaching and discipline for us, because the Inward that He—the Almighty—intended within the meaning of the forms of these outward religious laws manifested by the Messengers—such as fasting, prayer, pilgrimage (Hajj), almsgiving (Zakat), and struggle (Jihad)—is his—the Almighty—first Sunna (Way), which has existed since the beginning of creation, neither shifts nor changes. As for their originated outward aspects (Zawahir)—which are formal, parabolic, and varying through shifting and changing—they are not His Sunna. Rather, He—Glory be to Him—established them for two meanings: one for concealment, and the second to indicate the Inward (Al-Batin). His—the Almighty—intent is not these outward religious laws (Al-Shara'i' al-Zahira) which contradict one another; rather, the intent is their Inward, which does not change or vary from one time to another, as is the case with the outward religious laws.

So contemplate, O seeker, the words of the Lord Christ in the eighth chapter of the Gospel of John, saying: "Verily, verily, I say unto you, If a man keep my word, he shall never see death."
