Exalted be He—is the Inward of the religious laws (Batin al-Shara'i'), not their Outward (Zahir). This is because none of the Messengers—peace be upon them—upheld the [outward] religious law of another. This, in its outward sense, indicates their divergence from His command—Exalted be He—and the negation of the Outward (Naqd al-Zahir). It also indicates that it is necessary for those who believe in the outward aspects of the Muhammadan laws to either uphold the outward laws of all the Messengers or to negate them and affirm their Inward specifically.

Among the sayings indicating the condemnation of those who believe in some of the Messengers and Heavenly Books and disbelieve in others, and who differentiate between God and the Messengers, and [indicating] the praise of those who did not differentiate between any of the Messengers, is the saying of the Almighty in Surah An-Nisa: {Indeed, those who disbelieve in Allah and His messengers and wish to discriminate between Allah and His messengers and say, "We believe in some and disbelieve in others," and wish to adopt a way in between—Those are the disbelievers, truly. And We have prepared for the disbelievers a humiliating punishment. But those who believe in Allah and His messengers and do not discriminate between any of them—to those He will give their rewards. And ever is Allah Forgiving and Merciful.} (An-Nisa: 150 - 152).
