Meaning that this Inward religion (Al-Din al-Batin), symbolized by the Mosque, refers to celestial lights and divine gnosis (Ma‘arif). As for the religion of the people of the Outward (Ahl al-Zahir), they only refer by it to these worldly names and physical movements such as eating, drinking, traveling, standing, sitting, and the like.

Then He—the Almighty—struck for us the parable of the building on righteousness (Taqwa) and the building on the edge of a crumbling precipice, to alert us—Glory be to Him—that the believer in Outward knowledge, symbolized by the founding of the building on the edge of a crumbling precipice, will fall with it into the fire of Hell; whereas the believer in Inward knowledge, symbolized by the founding of the building on righteousness from God, is better for him.

Among what indicates this meaning is the interpretation (Ta’wil) of this noble verse in the book Al-Safi from the Prophet (PBUH), by his pointing to this meaning for the people of Quba, saying to them: "What do you do in your purification, for God has bestowed upon you fair praise?" They said: "We wash the trace of excrement." He said: "God revealed concerning you: {And Allah loves those who purify themselves. Then is one who founded his building}—the building of his religion—{on righteousness from Allah and [seeking] His approval}"
