It was because Adam approached Disbelief without intent (ghayr ta‘ammud), knowledge, or certainty—for it was forgetfulness and oversight without intention—that metamorphosis (al-masūkhiyyah) was not made binding upon him. Instead, it was made binding upon him to be expelled to the Realm of the World (dār al-dunyā).

He became a servant after being free; he became weary after being at ease; he became humbled after being mighty. Servitude (al-‘ubūdiyyah) was imposed upon him, and it was said to him: 'If you do not do [as commanded], We shall strike you and punish you.'

His station became like that of a slave who, if he does not do what he is commanded and what is made mandatory for him, is disciplined and tormented. He had been free in Paradise, doing as he pleased, but he became restricted, doing nothing except by command, prohibition, and [the threat of] punishment. Likewise, everyone who disbelieves in God intentionally, and seeks Him by way of substitution, attaining from Him what creatures attain from one another, it becomes binding upon him [the intentional disbeliever] is a servitude even worse than the first, through metamorphosis (al-masūkhiyyah) into that which is ridden, eaten, and drunk.
