did not impose upon them any weight except the lightest, in proportion to the extent of their ignorance. Thus, souls found comfort in them; most conditions were granted to them, they were given a share of the Trust (al-Amānah) and a portion of affection, and the eating of what is pleasant and the drinking of what their souls accepted was made lawful for them.

I say: The Almighty pointed to this meaning in Surat al-An‘ām, saying:

{And to those who were Jews We forbade every animal of uncloven hoof; and of the cattle and the sheep We forbade to them their fat, except what adheres to their backs or the entrails or what is joined with bone. That We repaid them for their transgression (baghyihim). And indeed, We are truthful.} (Al-An‘ām: 146).

Its meaning, according to the Jalalayn commentary for the people of the Exoteric (al-Ẓāhir): {their fat} refers to the suet—the fats that cover the intestines and the kidney fat; {except what adheres to their backs}—meaning what is attached to them; or what the {entrails}—the intestines—carry; {or what is joined with bone}, such as the fat of the tail, for He made that lawful for them. This prohibition was {We repaid them for their transgression}—meaning because of their injustice, as previously mentioned in Surat al-Nisā’.
