Al-Mufaddal was among a group of his companions drinking in a high room and conversing, when the Master—peace be upon him—descended upon them from the ceiling with a bouquet of marigolds (Adhriyun) in his hand, and said to them:
"Shākhar Bāsh Khut-Zandagān"1[Rejoice and live happily].
Then he said to them:
"It is permissible (halal) for you among yourselves; it is forbidden (haram) for you with others."
It is narrated by some of the companions of al-Mufaddal, on the authority of Da’ud Yazdad2, who said:
I was at the outskirts of Kufa during the forenoon and I stood in prayer. When I prostrated, I was called: "O Da’ud Yazdad! Do you seek nearness to Me through impurities? Do you not know that you are upon a land of [metamorphosed] flesh, transformed, impure, and soiled? Raise your head and supplicate to Me with your heart; I shall draw you closer to Me and bring near to you what you desire from Me." So I departed from that place in awe.
