The Letter (Al-Harf), Fasting (Al-Siyam). Every religion or people calls its object of worship by the Name of Majesty.
And know that these limits (al-Ḥudūd) mentioned previously—we do not disagree with the people of the exoteric regarding their legitimacy or their revelation (Tanzīl); rather, the disagreement is in the interpretation (al-Ta’wīl) only, for they have deviated from the esoteric meaning the firm and clung to its ambiguous exoteric [form]; thus their views differed and their sayings contradicted, because the name itself may be applied to many accidents (A'rad) and substances (Jawahir). For God has named the luminous persons with worldly names and coupled them with blame, so that we may know the praised, the blamed, and the neglected (al-Muhmal), and to conceal that esoteric knowledge from those other than its people in accordance with the law of Divine Justice; because they deviated from the truth, so God caused their hearts to deviate—a justice from Him Almighty, as He informed about them in Surat al-Hajj by His saying:
{And of the people is he who worships God on an edge (ala harf). If good befalls him, he is content with it; but if a trial befalls him, he turns on his face. He has lost [this] world and the Hereafter. That is the manifest loss. He invokes besides God that which neither harms him nor benefits him. That is the extreme error. He invokes him whose harm is closer than his benefit—how wretched a patron and how wretched an associate!} (Al-Hajj: 11-13).
