And know that the name "Hajj": according to the people of the exoteric (Ahl al-Zahir), it is applied to intent (al-Qasd) and visiting (al-Ziyarah).
As for the opinion of the people of monotheism: it is only the intent of the esoteric gnoses and persons.
The name "The House" (al-Bayt) is applied among the people of the exoteric to the house to which they perform pilgrimage in Becca. As for the people of the esoteric, it is applied to the Commander of the Faithful (Amir al-Mu'minin), and that he is the House to which He Almighty commanded us to perform pilgrimage, as in the "Sermon of Lights" (Khutbat al-Anwar) by his saying: "I am the Inhabited House (al-Bayt al-Ma'mur)."
And the Master al-Makzun, may God sanctify him, pointed to this meaning in one of his poems, saying:
Preserving the passion is my fasting, and my Hajj is its intent
And through it, my prayer within my Zakat is found
And the Jihad of my soul is its bearing of harm therein
And [through] the obstinacy of him who, regarding my passion, refutes me.
And he—may God sanctify him—gathered all the meanings of the five [religious] obligations in the Commander of the Faithful.
