"Say to them: Prayer was revealed and God did not specify for them three or four [units] until the Messenger of God explained that to them; and Zakat was revealed to him and He did not specify for them one dirham out of every forty until the Messenger of God explained that to them; and Hajj was revealed and He did not say to them, 'circumambulate seven times' until the Messenger of God explained that to them."

Indeed, al-Sadiq—peace be upon him—said that after his interpretation of His Almighty's saying: {Indeed, your ally is God} (Al-Ma'idah: 55). [He explained] that it was revealed concerning Ali, so that we may infer that He Almighty has named Ali with the name of "God," just as He [named] for us the five persons with the names of the prayers; and measure against that all the praised names in the Quran.

And know that the application of the name "prayer" to seeking forgiveness, religion, mercy, worship, bowing, prostration, supplication, and the remembrance of God is so that we may know with full knowledge that the addresses with which He Almighty addressed us in the revealed books by the name of prayer, seeking forgiveness, religion... etc... He intends by them nothing but the esoteric persons and meanings, as we have previously stated.
