And our Master, the Commander of the Faithful (Amir al-Mu'minin), pointed to His Almighty's intent regarding the month which we were commanded to fast in the "Sermon of the Regions" (Khutbat al-Aqalim), saying: "I am the sender of the rain; I am the crescent of the month."

And he also said therein: "I am the full moon of the constellations (Badr al-Buruj)."

And he also said therein:

"I am the moon of Cancer, I am the Sirius of the Zabarqan."

And he also said in his sermon:

"I am the obligation of the obligation."

And he also said:

"I am the reality of religions."

The name "month" (Shahr) is applied among the people of monotheism to our Master Abdullah bin Abdul Muttalib, and every manifestation (Zuhur) is called by the name "month," because the name "month" is derived from renown (al-Ishtihar), and it is the renown of the celestial and earthly existence.

And He Almighty pointed to this meaning by His saying: {It is He who made the sun a radiance and the moon a light and determined for it phases - that you may know the number of years and account [for time].}
