And this proves and confirms that He Almighty intends by this noble verse the esoteric prayer (al-Salah al-Batinah) and no other. And that is because the prayer that the Nawasib claim, the Prophet (PBUH) used to perform it aloud for the believer and the disbeliever, and they still perform it aloud as is known. And this indicates that it is not the prayer which they pray; otherwise, they would have all disobeyed God by performing it aloud to the disbelievers.
And know that these sayings and their likes indicate that He Almighty does not intend by any of these apparent names in the heavenly books except esoteric gnoses and persons. And the people of the exoteric also believe that the name of fasting may be applied to refraining from speech, which, according to their opinion, is not speaking at all.
As for the opinion of the people of monotheism (Ahl al-Tawhid):
Indeed, the fasting from speech (al-Sawm 'an al-Kalam) with which He Almighty addressed us in His Mighty Book is the silence from speaking with the adversaries about the esoteric secrets (al-Asrar al-Batinah).
And the jurist (al-Faqih) Hasan bin Hamza bin Muhammad al-Shirazi, may God sanctify him, explicitly stated this meaning in his book titled (Al-Tanbih), saying: "For silence is fasting."
