The existence of a believer is characterized by the presence of three distinct spirits: the primary spirit of the individual and two additional 'imprisoned' spirits.

The two imprisoned spirits were identified as the 'weakened one' and the 'inverted one.'

"As for the two confined [souls]: the name of one of them is 'The Weakened' (Al-Mustad'afah); within it occur sneezing, yawning, nocturnal emission (wet dreams), circulation, and movement within the body. It is for this reason that when a human sneezes, it is said to him: 'May Allah have mercy upon you,' and when one sneezes or yawns, he finds relief.

As for 'The Inverted' (Al-Maqlubah), within it are worms, feces, and urine. It is a tormented [soul]; urine flows in its nose and excrement in its mouth. For this reason, ablution (Wudu) was ordained for what emerges from the lower [extremity] and was not designated for what is above, due to the inversion of the spirit."
