The Commander of the Faithful—may His Might be exalted—replied: {"...that those who perished might perish upon a clear proof, and those who lived might live upon a clear proof."} 1Then He said: "By the One in whose hand is the soul of Muhammad, if I willed, I would stretch this leg of mine—and He struck His right hand upon His right thigh and extended His leg and shin—and strike with it the chest of the Son of Hind while he is upon his throne in Damascus, casting him down."
His leg and shin extended until they went out of the Great Mosque while the people were watching; then they saw it exiting from the Gates of Kinda and the outskirts of al-Sukun into the wilderness. Then He drew it back in that very hour.
And He said: "The news of the Son of Hind and what I have done to him shall surely reach you." Reports then arrived from Damascus that a leg and a shin had entered through the door of Mu'awiya while the people were watching, until it reached his chest, striking him off his throne onto the crown of his head, and then it withdrew.
