I said: "O my Master, will you write down this Talbiya (devotional call) for me?" He said: "You shall give me a recompense from your wealth."
I said: "O young man, give him three hundred dirhams." He said to me: "And what would it cost you if you gave the ten thousand dirhams?" I said to him: "O my brother, the wealth is little and the brethren are many." He said to me: "O Dawud, had you established the obligation (al-Fard) within me, it would have stood in the place of my brethren. O Dawud, indeed Allah has servants who, if they were to point to the pebbles of this earth, they would turn into rubies, gold, and silver." Dawud said: "By Allah, it appeared to me as if the entire earth were pearls, rubies, gold, and silver." Then he kicked the ground and said: "We only desired you as a sign, not out of a need for you." Then he wrote that Talbiya for me and vanished, and I did not see him again.
