As for Revelation (Al-Tanzil), it is its outward aspect and its recitation; while Interpretation (Al-Ta’wil) is what the Masters (Mighty is Their Might) explained of its inner meaning (Batin) from behind its recitation, according to their saying:

"Our discourse is like the Quran; it has an outward and an inner aspect."

[188] It has also been narrated from [another] perspective:

"The 'Revelation' is the Person of the Goal (Shakhs al-Ghayah), and the 'Interpretation' is the knowledge of the Meaning (Al-Ma'na) in its True Reality."

As for the Inner Meaning of the Lawful (Batin al-Halal):

"The 'Lawful' are the Veils (Al-Hujub), the Gates (Al-Abwab), the Orphans (Al-Aytam), and the Nobles (Al-Nuqaba'). It is lawful to give them allegiance (wilayah) and to receive [knowledge] from them."

As for the Inner Meaning of the Forbidden (Batin al-Tahrim):
