[172] The Al-Alim (Mighty is His Might) was asked about the saying of Allah the Exalted:

{Indeed, Allah has purchased from the believers their lives and their properties} ¹ .

He replied:

"Its meaning is that He set conditions upon them regarding their brethren, and guaranteed them Paradise as a profit in return."

And regarding His saying:

{They fight in the way of Allah} ² .

Its meaning is:

"They strive against their own souls (yujahiduna anfusahum) to seek the pleasure of Allah and to fulfill what He stipulated upon them for their brethren."

And regarding His saying:

{So they kill and are killed} ³ .
