The Chapter of the Miracle of the Master Abu Shu’ayb Muhammad ibn Nusayr (Peace be upon him)
[162] From Yahya ibn Ma’in (peace be upon him), who said: "It reached Al-Mu’tamid [the Abbasid Caliph] that Abu Shu’ayb was calling [people] to Al-Hasan al-Akhir [Al-Askari]. This weighed heavily upon Al-Mu’tamid, who said: 'He lives under my bounty yet calls to another? I shall surely strike his neck!'
This reached Al-Hasan al-Akhir, who said: 'May Allah curse Abu Shu'ayb; he has consumed my provision through mockery and said of me what I did not say.'
When this reached Al-Mu’tamid, he instead bestowed robes of honor upon Abu Shu’ayb and provided him with a mount. Yahya said: 'I was standing at the door of Al-Mu’tamid when Abu Shu’ayb emerged, preceded by trumpets (al-buqat) 1 and drums/noises (al-dabadib) 2 . I said to myself: "Is this the one they said calls to Al-Hasan al-Akhir?"
